Finalists in 47 categories of excellence for jazz and jazz-related media have been announced by the Jazz Journalism, for the 27th annual JJA Jazz Awards.
The JJA’s professional members — an international network of 200 writers, photographers, broadcasters, videographers and and other media producers focused on jazz — will vote on this slate of candidates through April 27, 2022.
Legendary reedist and bandleader Charles Lloyd, bassist and impresario William Parker, and trumpeter/composer Wadada Leo Smith top the list of more than 200 finalists, each receiving five nominations, including for Lifetime Achievement in Jazz. Also nominated in that category are composer-orchestra leader Toshiko Akiyoshi, Sun Ra Arkestra leader Marshall Allen, vocalist Sheila Jordan and composer-reedist Roscoe Mitchell. Lifetime Achievement in Jazz Journalism nominees are Larry Blumenfeld, Will Friedwald, John McDonough, Dan Ouellette and the late Greg Tate.
Two lists of nominees are displayed in two subsets here: Awards for Performance and Recordings, and Awards for Journalism and Media.
Winners of the 2022 JJA Jazz Awards will be announced on this website, on May 3, 2022. Honorees will receive their Awards from JJA members at public occasions throughout the year.
