Winners of Jazz Awards in 47 categories of excellence — in Jazz Performance and Recordings, and Jazz Journalism — have been announced. Sheila Jordan, “jazz child” on perpetual tour at age 93, is celebrated for her Lifetime Achievement in Jazz, and Greg Tate, who died December 7 2021 at age 63, is honored for his Lifetime Achievement in Jazz Journalism. Jon Batiste is named Jazz Musician of the Year — Sounds from the Ancestors by Kenny Garrett is Record of the Year, and Ted Gioia won two journalism Awards.

The third episode of The Buzz: The Jazz Journalists Association Podcast features JJA members Mark Ruffin (music director of Sirius XM’s Real Jazz channel) and Neil Tesser (critic and nationally syndicated broadcaster) analyzing the winning slate with podcast co-producer Rick Mitchell (of the syndicated KBOO program Jazz in the New Millenium).
